Dawson City

,

We slept on our just before Tok and soon found ourselves on the “Top of the World Highway” towards Dawson City in the Yukon Territory, Canada.

The 280 km long road didn’t feature much more than impressive wild scenery, a roadside town called Chicken, the border checkpoint Little Gold and about a 80km gravel road. After a couple of hours of driving, we finally made it – Dawson City!

Dawson looked like time stood still during the gold rush a hundred years ago. Unpaved roads, colorful wild-west style buildings with wooden plank boardwalks and store fronts with old sign boards. Replace cars with horses in your imagination and you find yourself in a wild-west movie (just finished watching Westworld Season 2 btw).

We stayed at a swiss-owned Hotel called Bunkhouse for 2 nights and enjoyed being part of Dawsons local daily life. In the evening we headed out for bars with live music as well as the oldest Casino in Canada (which doesn’t mean much): Diamond Tooth Gertie’s Gamble Hall. Besides the gambling the Casino also featured 3 Vaudeville shows every night which were quite entertaining (and special).

After 3 days we decided to drive back to Alaska, but we would take another loopback route further south which again takes us by Whitehorse! After 7 hours of driving and some flashbacks in Carmacks, we decided to stay in Whitehorse for the night – this time we joined dozens of other RVs on the local Walmart parking and spent our favorite restaurant & bar (Earls & The Dirty Northern) another, last visit.

Next day, we drove back to Tok, Alaska and continued north towards Fairbanks!
