Journey to Kodiak Island

,

After the boat tour we left Seward to get to Homer at the very west of the Kenai peninsula. From there we had a reservation for the ferry bringing us to Kodiak Island. The ferry left at 2 in the night so we weren’t in a hurry. Still we had a 3.5 hours drive before us. There was even enough time to get a proper dinner at a restaurant.

After we checked-in for the ferry, we were surprised about how this ship was loaded with cars. The ferry itself was fixed along the long side of the dock, cars drove onto a platform from the side. This platform was fitting 1-6 cars or a truck with trailer. The platform then actually turned out to be an elevator and descended into the ship. Down there, the procedure was not finished yet: Unhooked from the elevator cables, the platform was now turned almost 90° to allow cars to drive into the hull of the ship. Once parked, our car was fixed at 4 anchor points! Of course it took them quite a while to load all the cars – probably the reason for the high price and hence the low popularity among tourists to get to Kodiak by car. Anyway we came prepared and watched Rogue One using my Surface Pro and the cars’ audio system while waiting and loading.

We spent the night on the ferry sleeping in a table booth as we saved our money getting a cabin. At 11 in the morning we arrived at beautiful Kodiak (town) on Kodiak Island!
