Whistler Sports Mecca

,

Whistler is famous for as an all-year sports-mecca. As it is on our route south, it was a no-brainer to stop here.

Originating in the 80ies and built on the former landfill of Vancouver, while later extended for the Winter Olympic Games 2010, the town area is relatively young. In summer ski slopes are prepared to host downhill mountainbikers – let’s try that!

And it was awesome! A huge trailsystem offers a variety of different downhill difficulty levels. We hired a guide and did 3 runs while learning a lot about the most important techniques in downhill biking.

In the afternoon, we chose to go for the standard tourist activity: The peak 2 peak gondola connecting Whistler and Blackcomb mountains. A quite new & impressive gondola system by our Austrian Doppelmayr friends (didn’t know that there was a Doppelmayr-Garaventa fusion). At one point, the gondola soars as high as 436m over ground!
