Bowron Lakes Backcountry Canoe Adventure

,

Located west of Jasper, there is a provincial park named Bowron Lakes. On the map it looks like a large rhombus of connected lakes. In fact, you can rent a canoe and trekk the whole circle within 5-7 days. Unfortunately we didn’t have that time but still wouldn’t want to miss an adventure like that. Hence we went for a 3 day trip and canoed along the lakes in the west of the Bowron lakes.

We visited the park center, got our permits and a canoe and started packing our stuff. Along the lakes, there are basic campsites offering not more than a firepit (often including wood), a pit toilet and a level area for placing tents. Other than that – pure wilderness! No streets, no houses, no men made structures at all! So we had to pack a couple of things including stove, water-purification pills, beer and most important – bug spray and mosquito head-net. The area was full of the blood sucking beasts, I guess it’s a nice heads-up of what is expecting us in Alaska.

Anyhow, we packed our things, launched our aluminum canoe and headed out for a 3-day trekking adventure in breathtaking landscapes including some wildlife like moose, bald eagles, beaver and birds making funny sounds.
