Maligne Canyon and Miette Hotsprings

,

On our second day at Jasper, we headed towards Maligne Canyon, a creek carved stunningly deep into limestone. Furthermore, it starts as a small creek but grows fast in volume while being joined by underground rivers. All the underground water is coming from Lake Medicine – a lake without visible outflow. Instead the water flows through cracks in the lakebed through an yet unexplored cave system into Maligne Creek and Canyon. We also visited Medicine Lake and Maligne Lake including a small hike to Moose Lake – but the weather was getting worse and rainy in that valley.

We escaped the rain and headed off towards Pocahontas Campground to spend the night. On our way we enjoyed the nice evening mood and even saw our first moose!

Next and last day in Jasper, we did what was necessary to get a shower: Visiting an hot spring bath 🙂 Miette Hot Springs is the hottest in the Canadian Rockies (over 50° C) and seemed to be perfect. Just before that, we did a short hike to visit the old location of the bath and as well as the actual springs.

Now it’s time to move westwards, out of Jasper towards Bowron Lake Provincial Park!
